Caroline C. Granger
In the year 2000, it was her farming roots that spawned Caroline’s independence and entrepreneurship and prepared her to lead her parents and family into a brand new industry for the family farm and Prince Edward County. Her vision and drive in creating The Grange of Prince Edward Vineyards and Estate Winery is based on a deep connection to the land and an unwavering commitment to discovering the unique qualities Prince Edward County has to offer.
In 2010 Caroline’s daughter Maggie returned from school in Montreal to join her mother in crafting a vision of sustainability for the farm. Over the ensuing years they have redefined viticultural and oenological practices to develop their own sustainable wine program focused on the discovery of the beauty their farm has to offer while reducing waste on the farm by 95% (one bag every two weeks is all the entire winery produces these days) and creating a dynamic environment for women to work and thrive in traditional and non traditional roles alike. Caroline is passionate of protecting and preserving her little corner this wild and beautiful planet we are all privileged to share; seeing herself as a caretaker and active participant in reciprocity of life on the farm. As climate change threatens our future the drama unfolds on the farm with wild and unpredictable weather and fragile crops. Yet she does not waver in her conviction that we can all learn to live in harmony with our generous earth. Gratitude for what we are freely given and the wisdom to know what is enough are the keys she believes to our return to balance.
A single mother who raised her three children while developing the vineyards and winery: Caroline is a passionate advocate women’s rights, particularly the right to live a life free of violence (serving for over 20 years as the chair of the board for Alternatives for Women in Prince Edward County), the importance of providing real opportunities for women in trades creating a workplace that is geared toward empowered women in non traditional roles and the critical part family farms can play in the future of the Canadian prosperity.
